TALKOOT* 2019 JAN 25-27
Designing for ChildrenJoin us in integrating children’s rights** into design and business processes

@D4C_Guide
**U.N. declaration of children’s rights considers everyone between 0-18 years as children
However, the great benefits have accompanied a potential for harm. Children are facing a number of risks that may compromise their rights and well-being through:
- exposure of age-inappropriate content,
- age-inappropriate conduct or level of information,
- violation of privacy and personal data,
- online bullying,
- discrimination, and
- potential effects of excessive use of devices and digital content.
Although we are all still learning about the potential effects of technology on children and our societies, it is time to take the next step. We must begin to integrate consideration for the children’s rights into business design and development practices. It is imperative that we harness the vast potential of technology and new media for the greatest benefit of both children and businesses.
In Talkoot* 2018 we gathered as an international community of 70+ experts to address these issues. Over the weekend out community created the first version of Designing for Children’s Rights Guide that integrates U.N. children’s rights into design practices. In Talkoot* 2019 our goal is to extend our existing Design Guide with business design, and explore how could we together make the D4CR guidelines valuable, perhaps even critical from a business perspective. During the upcoming Talkoot* 2019, we will gather to explore solutions for business models and practices that respect and support children’s rights and build methods for implementing the guidelines into organisational and business development processes.
A weekend-long event of inspiration, discussion and hands-on work, for a better future for children. The event will take place January 25-27 in Copenhagen, Denmark at the Designit office, Bygmestervej 61.
UPDATE: the application period is now closed. We will film the talks and upload them to our youtube channel after the event. Subscribe to our newsletter at the bottom of this page to get the link delivered to your inbox.
THE CHALLENGE
The design and business community has the power to create the products and services that respect Children’s Rights. Together we can question the status quo, encourage responsible business conduct and ensure that child rights considerations are embedded in the design and development processes. How might we empower businesses to apply the Designing for Children’s Rights in their products and services, and learn how to gradually integrate the children’s rights into their core practice?
We want to bring the design and business community together to discover the key opportunities, challenges and needs for support when moving towards the inclusion of children’s rights in their practices. Throughout this weekend we will search for solutions and ideate how to integrate these considerations into the business and design processes.
THE GOALS
We will together explore solutions for business models and practices, that will respect and support children’s rights, and further ideate methods for integrating the children’s rights with D4CR guidelines into organisational and business development processes.First, we aim to extend the existing Designing for Children’s Rights Guide with business design and explore how could we together make the children’s rights valuable and even essential for businesses.
Secondly, we want to empower the design and business community on the subject of children’s rights through creation of hands-on tools that help to propel the integration process with daily work, business processes and organizations.
The results of the Talkoot 2019 will be published in the Designing for Children’s Rights Guide, which is available online for the global design and business community and for any other interested parties to use and share.
THE TRACKS
This track will be dedicated to developing the D4CR Guide further. Our existing guidelines still need more fine tuned design tools, and specifically business design tools that will help to connect our design methods with business needs and processes.
Invisible element
SUB-TRACK 1.1 : DESIGN TOOLS
- How can we enable designers to use the D4CR guidelines better, or more from a bottom-up mindset?
- How can we promote, or empower designers to promote the D4CR guidelines in internal processes and daily work?
- How can we make the D4CR guidelines as accessible as… coffee?
- What kind of methods are we missing from the D4CR guidelines?
- How might we improve the current D4CR guidelines?
SUB-TRACK 1.2: BUSINESS DESIGN TOOLS
- How to even think about children’s rights in business design?
- What business design tools would help in designing for the child’s best interest?
- How can we make the D4CR guidelines as accessible as coffee for businesses?
- What methods would help a business designer to connect the D4CR guidelines with their daily life, and the existing business processes and practices?
This track will be dedicated to making children’s rights valuable and critical for businesses by answering the question “why would you as a company follow the D4CR guidelines?”. We will work together to create value propositions, ways to measure impact and ways to overcome the existing barriers.

- What are the solutions for the known barriers?
